If I remember correctly there are 5 wires in the plug to the rectifier... 3 white, 1 red, and 1 black. Measure the resistance between all combinations of the white wires. They should all measure about the same, and somewhere near .1 ohms.

The 95 and 96 models had a higher 1st and 2nd gear ratio than all others I believe. This is why the 95-96 models have a 16/46 sprocket and chain set were all others have a 17/42 set.
