My question is I know that a oxygen sensor extender is needed for long tube install, but how long of an extension is needed for the oxygen sensor before the cats need to be?

it may take a lot of miles.. before the conditions are right for the oxygen sensor readyness test to perform a pass fail. your extension may have removed it too far from the exhaust flow. since the outer extension has to be drilled.. you might buy another pair and slightly enlarge the opening and swap that to the inner extension. and try again.
