In September of 1964, the funeral home was purchased by Max Harden of New Sharon and took the name of Harden Funeral Chapel. Max’s son, Ron, owned and operated the businesses in New Sharon & What Cheer for many years. After a fire completely destroyed the What Cheer chapel in May of 1977, the new chapel was built at its current location.

Max Harden purchased the funeral home from Mr. Taylor in 1943. The Harden's added a chapel to the home in 1966. Max's son Ron owned and operated the businesses in New Sharon & What Cheer for many years and after Max's death in 1989, sold them to David Langkamp and Calvin Van Arkel both of Oskaloosa.
