I am not familiar with the OM617 numbers, but if it is a turbo, you would need to change the rear end ratio (higher=lower numerically) to get anything close to 30 MPG.

If the pump has not been modified, you have engine mechanical issues or the pump is installed with incorrect timing. I haven't adjusted anything. Use a small amount of silicone sealant (or anaerobic sealant) on the new water pump gasket. Be careful not to overtighten the fan clutch bolts and I recommend you pup some blue LokTite on the threads before assembly. Honestly, the mercedes OM617 is a better engine than the 6.2/6.5 and will return better fuel economy. In fact any diesel engine you could get from anywhere would be better. Removing the rear muffler WILL improve the engines response as it does restrict exhaust flow. Removing the center muffler/resonator does not do as much good and soon the drone becomes annoying.
