Vulning pelican

This is an excerpt from The Vulning Pelican, an autobiographical novella and my first serious attempt at writing in July 2009. I’ll continue to post excerpts each week. Lister, of Gisburn, Yorkshire.—Ermine; on a fess sable, three annulets or.Pelican vulning turned out to be a bit of folklore, a mistaken apprehension that was codified in Christian art of the Middle Ages. (Perhaps due to the visible blood vessels on a pelican's throat pouch, or because pelicans macerate fish in their pouches before transferring this food to their young.) But, in a way, there is a broader truth ...The Badge of the Order. The badge of the order, “a pelican in its piety proper”, is symbolic of this service as the pelican sheds its own blood to feed its young. The pelican can be shown without the nest and chicks, when displayed this way it is “a pelican vulning itself”.
