The dedicatee, Harriet Cohen, gave the first performance on 1st February in 1933 with Adrian Boult conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Queen’s Hall in London. Vaughan Williams later adapted it for two pianos. He began the work in 1926 but did not complete it until 1931. The concerto is in three movements which play without a break.
