Mechanically identical to the Model 336, these rifles were sold under the names Glenfield, Glenfield Marlin or Marlin as Models 30, 30A, 30AS and 30AW. The Model 30AW package includes a gold-plated steel trigger, 3-9x32 factory-mounted scope, padded sling and offset hammer spur. It is identical to the current Marlin Model 336W.

The Glenfield 30A is/was the cheaper version of the Marlin 336. Then Marlin discontinued the Glenfield line. They still made the guns, but now called the Marlins. So a "Marlin 30A" is just a newer "Glenfield 30A", which is the no-frills version of a Marlin 336. Same guns, same internals, just not as pretty.

Gunjunkie. There is really none.. they are the same just different model numbers.. I do think the 30a was birch light colored wood compared the the walnut and walnut stained of the the 336.. You are correct, the Marlin Model 30A was made from 1973 to 1983. Since your gun has a 1972 serial number, it apparently was a leftover receiver that Marlin decided to use in 1973 with the introduction of the Model 30A.
