I'm coming from stocks and just starting to get familiar with futures and margin. If I have 20k USD in my account and long 1 ES contract intraday and it tanks 100 points (100 points * 50 USD = 50k USD) and I sell before close, what will happen? Do I lose 20k and owe Tradovate 30k more?Which one would be more recommended to go with for a small account (starting with $500), AMP or Tradovate? My original plan was to go with AMP, but they recently increased their after hours margin requirements for a good chunk of every month’s trading days. And that was before I saw Tradovate.

Or 2% risk $12.5k that's pretty close to 18x leverage... Now imagine your net worth is $125k liquid and you're trading a 10 lot with $12,500.

Tradovate es margin is 550 nq is 550 as well or 1k. I would say put 1.5k and start just to be safe. Even for es with margin 550 I would say 1.5k to start only if you have a plan after paper trading for a while
